Citadel of Tripoli — Qal‘at Sanjil
The fortress on the hill above the old city, begun by the Crusaders and finished by everyone since.
Raymond de Saint-Gilles began it in 1103 as a siege castle, and the city grew up around it. The Mamluks rebuilt it after 1289 and the Ottomans added the gate you walk through. From the walls you can read the whole city at once: the souks directly below, the Abu Ali river, and the sea beyond.
Visiting
Open to visitors. The climb up starts at Taleet al-Qalaa, at the edge of the souk.
