Madrasa al-Qartawiyya

Madrasas · Mamluk · early 14th c.

The city’s finest striped façade, built against the Great Mosque.

Founded by the emir Qartay alongside the Great Mosque. The façade is alternating black and white courses under a half-dome, and you only have to walk past it to understand why it appears in every book on Mamluk architecture in the Levant.
