Al-Mansouri Great Mosque

Mosques · Mamluk · 1294–1315

The city’s great mosque — and its minaret is the strangest thing in it.

Built immediately after the Mamluk conquest, on the site of a Crusader church. The minaret is square and Lombard, and it is widely held to be the church’s own bell tower, left standing and given a new job. The courtyard is wide and its shade is cold in July.

Visiting
